Africa’s Special Drawing Rights Allocations: Between Use, Efficiency and
Effectiveness

Monday August 23, 2021 saw the coming into effect of the largest IMF Special Drawing Rights (SDRs)
allocation in history in the midst of an economic slowdown induced by COVID-19 pandemic. AFRODAD
welcomes this development, coming on the heels of the inaugural African Conference on Debt and
Development (AfCoDD) and its outcome document – The Harare Declaration 2021.
