Jason highlights the urgent issues of corruption and economic governance highlighted during the Citizens’ Assembly in Kenya, organised by the Okoa Uchumi Coalition. The discussion emphasises that the challenges faced are not limited to Kenya but are reflective of a broader pattern affecting several developing countries, including Nigeria, Uganda, Ghana, Senegal, Sri-Lanka, Argentina, Bangladesh. He underscores that the existing international system is designed to protect those in power while impoverishing the vulnerable. Key discussion points include the damaging impact of fiscal consolidation and austerity measures on public services and the importance of rejecting the normalisation of these harmful policies.

Jason encourages a recognition of the inter-connectedness of corruption, debt, and governance, emphasising that corruption is not just a financial issue but a systemic disease that undermines societal values. As we look to the future, AFRODAD calls for sustained pressure for reform and improved debt management practices, highlighting that 2024 marks the beginning of a 30-year struggle for genuine change.

Join us as we delve deep into these critical conversations and explore paths forward for the citizens of Kenya and Africa in general.
